My mom said I live a spartan life. I like to get rid of stuff, actually I LOVE to get rid of stuff. It’s almost a hobby I have. And there is little I regret having gotten rid of. I guess there is the lettermens jacket. That was Eric’s and that is still a sore subject around here. But other than that…
I first practiced this method on my mom when I was still at home because she was, as she said herself, a pack rat. I got rid of lots of her junk this way and yes, she does know about it now (at least she will after she reads this post). In fact, I think she said she was thankful I had done it.
I would take all the things I wanted to get rid of and stuff them in a big garbage bag and then stuff the bag in some dark hole never to be found by my mom. If she wondered where a particular item had wandered off to; an item I thought needed the ol’ heave ho, I could quickly produce it. “Why here it is!”
I would keep the bag around for about three months and if she never asked for an item from the bag the whole thing went to the Goodwill, never opened again. That’s the rule of this game, if you never yearn for another thing out of the bag you have to get rid of all of it without peaking. Otherwise you may find yourself longing for the collection of rocks you painted in second grade or the bright yellow smiley face teapot. You know the kind of things I’m talking about.
I generally skip this step and ship it all to the Goodwill. I should probably employ this method more around my house and we might not be short a lettermens jacket.

The funny thing is I have my letterman jacket from Varsity soccer and for the life of me I can not part with it though you will never ever see me wear it.
I think I keep it to remind myself that I used to run fast and score goals.
I still have my lettermen jacket but haven’t worn it since high-school. But like Mrs. Rice said I for some reason would never be able to get rid of it.
My Dad still laments the day my Grandmother got rid of his lettermen jacket.
Oh…..No! No! Don’t get rid of the jackets….they are golden. My brother is 60 and still considers his letter sweater part of his wardrobe…. At least you didn’t throw away the “Eric”..that’s good.
Kevin and Kyle are waiting desperately for their jackets which should be ready by Friday. In the meantime, their dad’s jacket is a good substitute even though the colors aren’t right.
My packrat husband went through a few boxes from the garage over the weekend and actually got rid of quite a bit!
Guys, guys, guys, this is not helping the situation here at home. As I said before this is a SORE subject around here. I think I just won’t let Eric read these post comments.
I didn’t get rid of his graduation robe, though, that’s pretty good!
Sorry, Meghan…..I did think of that. I’m LOL!!! My grandkids LOVE dressing up in their Dad’s graduation robe which I saved for some unknown reason…..you can file that to the dress up basket”.
lol that is hilarious. I love getting rid of things, too. My general rule is, if I haven’t used it in a year…PITCH!
Ellen, this was my thought exactly which is why I got rid of the jacket. Everyone knows that no one wears their lettermans jacket.
I did learn my lesson, though, and though this line of reasoning could be appied to the graduation robe, I will refrain from pitching it:).
